Chinch Bug

Scientific Name: Blissus sp. Order: Hemiptera

The chinch bug is a normal component of the insect fauna of lawns, but in most lawns does not do noticeable damage. Significant damage occurs when a combination of weather, site and management factors favor proliferation and aggregation of chinch bugs and lower the tolerance of grasses to injury. Water stress, thatch accumulation, excess nitrogen are key factors contributing to chinch bug outbreaks as discussed in this page. These conditions can be largely ameliorated by appropriate cultural practices and/or some redesign of the lawn system.
